Description

Abalone, any of several marine snails, constituting the genus Haliotis and family Haliotidae in the subclass Prosobranchia (& class Gastropoda), in which the shell has a row of holes on its outer surface. Abalones are found in warm seas worldwide.

Based on their different species, abalones usually range from 10 to 25 cm (4 to 10 inches) across and up to 7.5 cm in depth.

Abalones have long been a valuable food source for humans in every area of the world where a species is abundant. The meat of this mollusc is considered a delicacy in certain parts.

Moreover, just like shark fin soup or bird’s nest soup, abalone is also considered a luxury item, and is conventionally reserved for special occasions such as weddings and other celebrations.
